Barbara Kasten Architecture & Film
Barbara Kasten Architecture & Film
This book spans five years of Barbara Kasten’s recent installations following Barbara Kasten: Stages, the artist’s first major museum survey in 2015 at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, the Graham Foundation in Chicago, and MOCA Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles (2016).
Since the 1970s, Kasten’s nearly five-decade engagement with abstraction and light has developed through the lens of sculpture, painting, theater, textile, and installation. Well-known within photographic and contemporary art discourse, the artist has recently begun to be reconsidered within the broader context of architectural theory.
Edited by Stephanie Cristello, Barbara Kasten: Architecture & Film (2015–2020) concretizes this legacy within the artist’s practice and contextualizes her ongoing investigations into how moving images and perception play within and through architectural forms.

Barbara Kasten: Site Lines Exhibition 22nd of June- 8th September 2024 at the De La Warr Pavilion.
Site Lines, Kasten’s first solo exhibition in a UK public gallery, comprises a new, site-specific commission that responds to the distinctive architectural features of the De La Warr Pavilion’s Grade I listed modernist building. Furthering her interest in the mechanisms and structures of how images are created, she has reconceived the gallery’s windows as a proscenium: a threshold between inside and outside space.
